How does a water softener work?

The installation of a home water softener is a softening system that is installed at the water inlet of your home so that all the water entering it passes through a bed of specialized resin. How a home water softener works is that as the water passes through the resin, the calcium and magnesium ions that form hardness chemically attach themselves to the resin beads, and only the softened water continues on its way to supply your home. Over time, the resin accumulates ions and needs to be cleaned. The salt is then used in the form of brine to return the resin to its original state through a process called “regeneration”, to prepare it for its next ion exchange cycle.
