Homemade sports drinks!

News

In our last article, we talked about sports drinks and when it’s right and necessary to consume them. Even if you’re following a very demanding training program though, perhaps you’re not thrilled with the idea of consuming so many calories and chemicals like dyes in your hydration drink. Or maybe the flavours on the market don’t appeal to you and you’d like to vary the possibilities while controlling the sugar levels you consume… whatever the reason, here are a few recipes for you to try and adapt to suit your needs and tastes. Naturally, the base of each of these beverages is Kinetico purified water treated by reverse osmosis 😉

Orange flavor

  • 3 1/2 cups purified water
  • 1/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup or honey
  • c. tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 c. teaspoon salt (to replace mineral salts lost through perspiration)

Lemonade flavor

  • 1 ½ to 2 cups purified water
  • 1/4 cup freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1/8 c. teaspoon salt
  • 2 c. with honey

Strawberry/coconut flavor

  • 1 cup purified water
  • 3 cups coconut water
  • 1 cup fresh or frozen strawberries (thawed)
  • 1 cup crushed ice
  • 1/8 c. teaspoon salt
  • 2 c. with honey

Cranberry and grapefruit flavor

  • A few ice cubes of purified water, to taste
  • 90 ml aloe juice
  • 90 ml pure cranberry juice (unsweetened)
  • 22 ml grapefruit juice
  • 22 ml maple syrup
  • 1 pinch of fleur de sel

Any of these recipes will provide you with a beverage similar to sports drinks in terms of recovering electrolytes lost during physical activity, plus the vitamins present in real fruit juice. If the weather is very hot, you can reduce the amount of sugar, honey or maple syrup. In hot weather, your body will need more water than sugar.
